First Option Bank and Community Grantors Champion Healthcare through Philanthropic Giving
Strengthening the community has been a top priority of First Option Bank since its founding in 1923.
According to Keri Peterson, senior vice president, that commitment inspired the bank’s longstanding support of health-related initiatives in our city.
“We know that having a strong community starts with good health. We aim to make the most impact right here by supporting top-notch healthcare in and around Miami County where most of our customers live and work,” she said.
First Option Bank has put that steadfast commitment into action not only through its own charitable giving, but also by serving as trustee for several foundations created by generous grantors who share the bank’s vision for a healthier community.
“These grantors are the true champions of community health,” Peterson emphasized. “Their foresight and generosity have allowed us to steward funds that make a lasting difference.”
In total, First Option Bank and the foundations it administers, such as the Louis W. and Dolpha Baehr Foundation Charitable Trust, the Kelly Charitable Trust and the Roman Foundation, have donated and facilitated the disbursement of more than half a million dollars benefiting cancer, cardiac and hospice care, as well as other technological advancements.
“First Option Bank has been an integral partner in advancing health care, especially in Miami County,” said Shawn Long, vice president, philanthropy, corporate and community outreach at The University of Kansas Health System. “No doubt, their contributions alongside the generosity of local grantors have fueled powerful advancements and saved lives.”
A cause that hits home
Peterson feels a personal connection to this philanthropic giving. She is a patient of the health system and grateful to be in remission from cancer for 5 years.
“Cancer affects everyone,” she said. “Having excellent care of all types, especially nearby, means everything to our community.”
She is particularly excited to see the health system’s rapid expansion in the area.
“As our population ages, we know it is vital our neighbors have continuity of care. The increase in the number of providers and specialties has been terrific to see,” she relayed.
The right fit for a bright future
First Option Bank has a legacy of excellence that Peterson believes parallels the evolution of the health system.
“Like the health system, we have continued to grow. Yet we have stayed true to our core mission and values,” Peterson said. “Our continued partnership with the health system – and the foundations we steward – empowers us to help this community thrive.”
“First Option Bank does not just talk about building a strong community. They make it happen with continued generosity and investment,” said Long. “We look forward to a bright, healthy future together.”
