COVID-19 Facts and Information
Safety is a top priority at Olathe Health. We are closely monitoring local, state and national health guidelines and planning ahead to be prepared for COVID-19.
At all Olathe Health locations, we are prepared and ready to care for all patients, including those with COVID-19. In order to mitigate the spread of disease and protect our patients and staff, we have implemented several changes to our normal business operations. Please read below for more information.
Olathe Health has established a Nurse Call Center for patients.

Please use this hotline if you suspect you have mild symptoms of COVID-19, have been in close contact with a confirmed case, or have questions about recent travel.
If you suspect you may have COVID-19 and you are experiencing serious symptoms – such as difficulty breathing, seek immediate help at the ER. Please call ahead to alert the ER you are coming.
State Testing Process
Please note, on March 18, the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) changed testing procedures. Only patients with serious symptoms will be tested. Individuals who have MILD or NO symptoms will not be tested at this time. We will direct patients with mild symptoms (fever, cough) to isolate at home and away from family members for at least seven days after symptoms started or for 72 hours after symptoms are gone.
Please do not visit our Emergency Care Centers if you do NOT have serious symptoms.

To help reduce the spread of respiratory illness, Olathe Medical Center and Miami County Medical Center have restricted all non-essential visitors.
We will allow exceptions for the following:
- One parent or guardian for pediatric patients and neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) babies
- One support person for labor and delivery patients
- One support person for patients having outpatient procedures
- Additional exceptions may be made for certain situations
No visitors are allowed in an isolation room at any time. If you are a patient’s driver, please drop the patient off to hospital personnel and wait in your vehicle.
Please note that any individual granted an exception who answers yes to any screening questions below will not be allowed in our facilities. The screening questions are:
- Do you have, or have you had in the last 7 days, a fever over 100 degrees and/or symptoms of respiratory illness (e.g. cough, sore throat, or shortness of breath)?
- Have you had close contact with someone who has or is under investigation for COVID-19 in the last 14 days?
We understand that this policy might be difficult for patients and visitors. However, we are making these restrictions out of an abundance of caution to keep our patients and caregivers as safe as possible!
The Birth Place at Olathe Medical Center
- Only one support person is allowed into The Birth Place. At this time, no visitors are allowed.
- All pre-admission tours are canceled. You may still conduct your pre-admission appointment over the phone. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact pre-admissions coordinator Clara Davis at 913-791-3500, Ext. 4128.
Olathe Health Cancer Center
- Only one support person is allowed for patients having outpatient procedures.
Olathe Health Hospice House
- DO NOT enter this facility if you have signs or symptoms of a respiratory illness, such as:
- Sore throat
- Shortness of breath
- OR, you have had contact with someone who has or is under investigation, for COVID-19 in the last 14 days.
- If you have any of these signs or symptoms, please return home and call the Hospice House at 913-324-8588. We're happy to discuss scheduling a virtual visit with your loved one via the internet.
In an effort to help reduce the spread of respiratory illness, we are canceling or postponing all non-essential classes, events and support groups at an Olathe Health facility until further notice. If you are registered for an upcoming class that is affected, we will contact you with more information. If you have any questions, please contact one of the following offices:
- For Birth and parenting classes, call 913-791-4312, option 2.

We are still allowing patients to come in for their scheduled doctor's appointment if they are NOT showing signs of respiratory illness, such as:
- Sore throat
- Shortness of breath
If you are showing symptoms, please contact your doctor's office and reschedule. If you are uncomfortable coming to your appointment or have other questions regarding COVID-19, you are welcome to call our Call Center at 913-782-2224 and speak with an Olathe Health representative.
For the safety of our patients and associates, as we work to contain COVID-19, effective Monday, March 23, Olathe Medical Center (OMC) and Miami County Medical Center (MCMC) are postponing most non-urgent medical procedures and surgeries on a case-by-case basis determined by the physician. Scheduled patients are being notified directly by their provider.
This decision was made for the safety of our patients and associates, as well as to help conserve our hospital resources for critically ill patients. This action follows guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and a number of respected physician specialty societies. In two weeks, our medical staff leaders will reassess the plan, and provide additional guidance based on the safety of our patients, providers and associates.
Please note, this is for hospital procedures only. Most Olathe Health primary care and specialty clinics are still open and seeing patients. If you have questions, please contact your provider or clinic directly.
Valet service has been temporarily suspended. If you need wheelchair assistance, please call 913-324-8558, and someone will assist you.

Provided below are answers to some commonly asked questions about COVID-19 from our providers and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
How does it spread?
COVID-19 is spread by close person-to-person contact from droplets from a cough or sneeze, or by touching a surface or object that has the virus on it then touching your mouth, nose or eyes. It can also be spread through shaking hands or close personal contact.
What are the symptoms?
- Shortness of breath
How can you prevent getting it?
You are at a greater risk of getting seriously ill from the influenza virus than COVID-19. Get a flu shot if you haven’t already.
The following tips will help to prevent COVID-19, as well as other respiratory viruses:
- Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol.
- Cover your cough/sneeze with a tissue.
- Don’t touch your eyes, nose or mouth.
- Avoid close contact with sick people.
- Clean and disinfect high-touch surfaces often.
- Stay home when you are sick.
What should you do if you think you have COVID-19?
- If you're experiencing mild symptoms, the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) recommends isolating at home.
- If your illness is worsening (for example, difficulty breathing or eating), please seek immediate care. Call your healthcare provider or the ER before coming.

Homemade Masks, Gowns and Face Shields
We are now accepting homemade masks, isolation gowns and face shields, which may be used in a later-phase critical crisis plan. If you would like to donate these items, please use the approved patterns below.
