Diabetes is a serious disease that affects the body’s ability to make or manage insulin, a hormone that is key in delivering glucose to cells.

The diabetes team at Olathe Health specializes in helping patients learn how to control blood sugar levels over the long term, and provides support, education, resources and encouragement.

About Diabetes

In the United States alone, more than 30 million adults—nearly 1 in 9—have diabetes. Another 84 million adults have prediabetes, a condition that increases one’s risk for developing diabetes, heart disease and stroke. And these numbers continue to climb.

Left undiagnosed or untreated, diabetes can lead to heart and kidney disease, amputations, blindness and other serious and sometimes life-threatening problems.

Our Diabetes Education Team

Olathe Health has Diabetes Education offices located in Olathe and Paola. Both are staffed with caring, experienced certified diabetes educators, nurses and dietitians who help you learn healthy eating habits, lifestyle changes, self-care tasks and medication management. They provide education and support to patients in the hospital, as well as through outpatient programs. Many primary care physicians care for diabetic or prediabetic patients, as do endocrinologists. Our Diabetes Education team will work closely with your primary care provider or endocrinologist to help manage your diabetes.

Diabetes Classes and Support Groups

Olathe Health offers a number of educational programs to help people live with diabetes. Education includes information about signs and symptoms, risk factors, treatment options and lifestyle changes. Patients may be referred to our Diabetes Education services by their physician or self-referred. The cost of some services may be covered by health insurance, but since individual policies vary, check with your insurance provider to verify coverage.

Our team provides resources to patients, including individual appointments, a prediabetes class, a diabetes support group and a diabetes self-management class.
