Scope of Practice

The Olathe Medical Center Pharmacy is a comprehensive inpatient pharmacy providing IV admixture, chemotherapy, decentralized clinical monitoring, pharmacokinetic dosing service, code blue and stroke response, drug use policy, formulary management,  along with education for patients,  nurses and physicians.

Olathe Medical Center utilizes computerized physician order entry and Cerner RX Station drug distribution system.  All medication is dispensed in a bar-code readable form for bed-side scanning. The pharmacy department provides services 24 hours per day, 365 days per year.

Currently, the pharmacy has twenty-five full and part time pharmacists on staff.  Twelve are board certified in pharmacotherapy (BCPS).  Antimicrobial stewardship pharmacists assist in judicious use of antibiotics throughout the hospital.  Emergency medicine services are provided seven days a week. Clinical coverage stems from a team-based integrated clinical model including teams that cover critical care, internal medicine, med/surg, emergency medicine and cardiology. The pharmacy leadership team consists of the Director of Pharmacy, Operations Manager and Clinical Coordinator.

Our team also consists of fifteen full and part time technicians – all of whom are nationally certified (PTCB). The technicians are entrusted with the task of providing excellent patient care, in the most efficient manner possible and with great attention to detail. Our technicians are excellent at adapting into different roles as the role of pharmacists evolves. Pharmacy technicians provide medication history services seven days a week in the emergency department and inpatient nursing units.

The pharmacy has twelve pharmacy student interns from the University of Kansas and University of Missouri-Kansas City pharmacy schools.  As they advance through our program, these student interns have the opportunity to progress from distributive technician roles to clinical roles which include patient education and drug therapy monitoring.

The Olathe Medical Center PGY1 Pharmacy Residency Program is a 12-month post-graduate program designed to provide three residents experience in patient care and practice management.

Olathe Medical Center pharmacy also serves as an introductory and advanced practice site for pharmacy students from the University of Kansas and the University of Missouri-Kansas City.  In addition the Olathe Medical Center pharmacy serves as a training site for pharmacy technician students from Johnson County Community College, Heritage College, and Concorde Career College.
