Please join us in-person or virtually for our Annual Stroke Symposium on Thursday, October 27, 2022 from 8 a.m. – 1230 p.m.
The Bi-State Stroke Education Consortium is composed of 29 health organizations. These organizations have agreed to collaborate to enhance the educational opportunities for providers of stroke care across the continuum. Each member institution agrees to host a 4 hour stroke focused educational segment for nurses each calendar year. This event is open to staff of all members at no charge.

AGENDA:
8:30 – 9:15 a.m. Stroke in the Emergency Department
Speaker: Melina Keithly, MD
Upon the completion of this presentation, the participant will be able to:
· Discuss the evaluation and management of stroke in the emergency department.
9:20– 10:05 a.m. Antihyperglycemic Medications with Proven CVD Benefit
Speaker: Samantha Brown, PharmD
Upon the completion of this presentation, the participant will be able to:
· Describe the following drug classes that have been shown to reduce mortality in cardiovascular disease including, dipeptidyl peptidase 4 inhibitors (DPP4i), glucagon-like peptide-1 agonists (GLP1), and sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 inhibitors (SGLT2i)
· Examine the literature supporting the use of the above drug classes in patients with cardiovascular vascular disease
· Appraise place in therapy of antihyperglycemic agents in the treatment of stroke patients at Olathe Medical Center

· Describe benefits and evidence-based practices of early mobility in stroke
11:00 – 11:45 a.m. Dysphagia Screening and Swallow Evaluation
Speaker: Kristin Everest, SLP
Upon the completion of this presentation, the participant will be able to:
· Define dysphagia
· Identify which populations are most impacted by dysphagia
· Describe the differences between screening, clinical evaluation and diagnostic testing
11:50 – 12:20 p.m. Diabetic Nutrition in Stroke: TLC Diet
Speaker: Lee Mullen, RD
Upon the completion of this presentation, the participant will be able to:
· Summarize the aspects of TLC program, focusing on diet
· Recommend the TLC diet as non-pharmaceutical management for secondary stroke prevention
· Discuss unique aspects of the TLC program diet as they relate to secondary stroke prevention and diabetes management
· Recognize how clinicians can increase patient compliance with TLC program recommendations
