Olathe Health Homegrown - Marisa Cunning, RN, BSN

Chances are you know an Olathe Health associate who has worked here for several years, even decades. They may have advanced to different levels and/or departments. We're honored they have chosen Olathe Health as the place to build their careers, and we'd like you to meet some of these accomplished individuals.

The Homegrown series features associates who have shown immense dedication to their own growth, as well as to Olathe Health.

Marisa Cunning, RN, BSN, has been with Olathe Health for almost 18 years. She’s the Infection Preventionist/Quality Specialist at Miami County Medical Center, which happens to be her first daytime positon at Olathe Health. Marisa started as a medical surgical nursing technician in 2002. She went on to earn her nursing degree, eventually transferred to the emergency department, and became the nursing supervisor. After 13 years on the night shift, she ended her run and transitioned to her current role.

What is one accomplishment at work you are most proud of and why?

I am most proud that in every role I’ve worked in, I could touch patients’ lives, help them get better, and assist in maintaining their safety.

How has Olathe Health supported you in your career development?

From the first day of employment at Miami County Medical Center (even as a nursing student), it was obvious high standards were part of the expectation. So, I knew early on this was somewhere I would like to have a future. My preceptors and mentors have always been very knowledgeable, helping me grow as a nurse.

What advice would you give to someone starting in your field of work?

Never be afraid to ask questions or ask for help when you need it. There is always a coworker willing to assist you.

What do you love most about your job?

In my current role, I love that I’m able to work with other departments with the same goal in mind – keeping patients safe. It’s a team approach, and we have a great team!

What do you find most rewarding about working at Olathe Health?

Individually, and as a team, we touch many lives daily and assist people in their healing. It’s very rewarding when we receive notes or cards from patients about the impact our care had on them.

What hobbies or interests do you have outside of work?

Outside of work, I most enjoy spending time with my family. I also love spending time in Florida, reading, walking on the beach in search of unique shells, or just sitting while listening to and watching the waves.

What is something most people don't know about you?

Most people don’t know that my favorite shows to watch are about African wildlife, and my dream is to go on a safari someday.

If you could learn to do anything, what would it be?

Play the piano. As a child, I took lessons for a short time, and I wish I would have continued it.

When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you "grew up?"

I wanted to be a nurse. My grandmother lived with my family for a period when I was growing up. Seeing my mother take care of her, I knew I wanted to take care of people when I grew up.
