When Mary Jo raced against breast cancer,
a connected team of caregivers ran with her
In a routine physical in December of 2004, Mary Jo Sandberg’s primary care physician, Dr. Kathryn Chartrand, discovered a lump in Mary Jo’s breast and recommended that she schedule a mammogram at Olathe Medical Center. Abnormal findings on the mammogram led to an ultrasound-guided biopsy that confirmed the presence of cancer.
Collaborative thinking
That’s when Team Mary Jo began to take shape. Dr. Dawn Jones, a general surgeon from Midwest Surgical Associates at OMC helped coordinate appointments with oncologist Dr. David Lee with Olathe Cancer Care, radiologist Dr. Sarah Sherard from United Imaging Consultants, and reconstructive surgeon Dr. Bradley Storm from Premier Plastic Surgery.
Connected care
Dr. Jones explains “Our multidisciplinary approach makes the breast cancer program at OMC unique. All of us collaborate in the patient’s care, meet to discuss our options, and make clinical decisions that are best for the patient.”
A personalized plan
In Mary Jo’s case, that meant a double mastectomy, chemotherapy and breast reconstruction that occurred from February 2005 through November 2005, and included running in the Des Moines Marathon that summer. Mary Jo has been cancer free since then. But she’s still running against breast cancer and recently participated in the 2009 Susan G. Komen Race For the Cure in Kansas City.
The patient’s perspective “I was so thankful that all of my care was through the same system of caregivers,” Mary Jo states. “I had top-notch care from start to finish. I feel very fortunate.”
