New Robotic Technology for Knee Replacements
Olathe Health orthopedic surgeons are now using advanced robotic technology to plan and perform your knee replacement surgery. This hand-held robotic tool provides a great degree of accuracy, without the need for metal rods, CT scans or pre-surgical MRIs.

A knee replacement is recommended when the knee joint has deteriorated and the joint surfaces need to be replaced with artificial materials. The surgeon creates a unique plan for each patient to ensure the knee implant is positioned and aligned correctly with the knee’s anatomy. With the new robotics technology, the surgeon uses the device to create a customized 3D digital model of your knee. This 3D view helps the surgeon verify the correct size implant and exactly how it should be placed to optimize the knee’s movement and function after surgery. It also eliminates the need for a CT scan of the knee before surgery.

  • Joint replacements are recommended when a joint has deteriorated and the joint surfaces need to be replaced with artificial materials. This procedure is commonly performed on hips and knees, and some smaller joints like the ones in shoulders, wrists and hands can also be replaced. Joint replacement surgery is usually considered only after other treatment options have failed to provide adequate relief from pain or disability.

Strides in orthopedic surgery have led to a unique outpatient hip replacement procedure at Olathe Medical Center that gets patients home faster and healing just as quickly.

  • Ligament reconstruction refers to a type of surgery that is done to help rebuild ligaments that have been damaged. In some cases, ligaments will heal without surgery, but in most instances surgery is necessary for future stability of the joint. Ligament reconstruction uses healthy tendon tissue to repair a damaged ligament. Some of the more common ligament reconstruction surgeries involve the knee, such as ACL or PCL reconstruction, to repair tendons that support it.

  • For many types of tendonitis and joint inflammation, an injection of cortisone, a strong anti-inflammatory medicine, can be an effective way to reduce or eliminate joint pain and swelling. This treatment is most often used in joints like the hips, knees and shoulders.

  • Shoulder joint replacements are recommended when the joint has deteriorated and the joint surfaces need to be replaced with artificial materials, usually metal and high-density plastic. Shoulder replacement surgery is usually considered only after other treatment options have failed to provide adequate relief from pain or disability.

  • When the tendons and muscles of the rotator cuff are overly stretched or damaged, the shoulder may become unstable. If your pain does not improve with nonsurgical methods, or if you are very active and use your arms for overhead work or sports, surgery may be right for you. Depending on the type of repair needed, there are different surgical approaches available, from minimally invasive arthroscopic repair, a partial open repair and the traditional open surgical repair.

  • From your shoulder to the tips of your fingers, your hands and arms are almost always in motion. If pain or injury starts to slow you down, you need experts you can trust. Our orthopedic hand surgeons have advanced training in the treatment of hand, wrist and elbow issues and injuries. Their knowledge and experience can help you regain range of motion and function.
