U.S. News & World Report Names Olathe Medical Center a High Performing Hospital for Heart Failure

OLATHE, KAN. (July 28, 2020) – Olathe Medical Center (OMC) has been recognized as a High Performing Hospital for 2020-21 by U.S. News & World Report. The award names OMC one of the best in the country for heart failure treatment.

For the 2020-21 ratings, U.S. News evaluated more than 4,500 medical centers nationwide in 10 procedures and conditions. Fewer than a third of all hospitals received a high-performance rating.

“We are honored to receive this great recognition for the work our multidisciplinary team has put into providing the most personalized care possible for our patients,” Dušan Stanojevic, MD, a cardiologist at OMC who is a lead cardiologist in heart failure treatment, said. “Through our work with the American College of Cardiology, we have developed programs at OMC designed to help our patients manage their heart health after they leave the hospital to avoid readmission. We are proud of the program we’ve created to help our patients and continue to strive to enhance the care we provide.”

Some of the programs OMC has implemented to enhance cardiology care include:

  • Nurse Navigator: The navigator helps educate and coordinate each patient’s care. She meets with the patient while they are in the hospital, follows up with them after their hospital visit, and helps manage their ongoing cardiology care, including coordinating appointments and medication.
  • Medication Education: In addition to the overall education provided by the nurse navigator, a pharmacist meets with the patient to provide information about their specific medication and ensure they understand when and how often they should take it.
  • Heart-Failure-Focused Clinic Care: Within Olathe Health Cardiology Services, there is a portion of the clinic dedicated to heart failure care. This includes getting a heart failure patient in to see their doctor quickly when needed to adjust their medication and provide changes to their long-term care plan.

Nationally Recognized Cardiology Care
In addition to the High Performing Ranking, OMC has also received national recognition from the American College of Cardiology (ACC) for its commitment to high-quality heart attack and heart failure care.

In 2018, OMC was selected by the American College of Cardiology as one of 15 hospitals to participate in the Patient Navigator Program: Focus MI Quality Campaign as a “Diplomat Hospital.” The 15 Diplomat Hospitals have been focusing on identifying best practices for improving patient care and readmission, and will use this collective information to help other hospitals and institutions across the country. This is an expanded version of the original Patient Navigator Program launched in 2013, of which OMC was one of 35 pioneering hospitals.

In 2019, OMC received the Platinum Performance Achievement Award for Chest Pain from the American College of Cardiology’s NCDR – MI Registry. The Platinum award is the premier award from the ACC and is only awarded to 225 hospitals nationwide. OMC has received the platinum recognition for cardiac care for eight consecutive years.
