CPR Class Saves Another Life
Last year, the education department at OMC trained more than 1,300 hospital employees and members of the community in CPR and first aid. On March 18 of this year, the knowledge taught in one of those classes helped save the life of a local man.
Gene Roarke was found lying on the ground outside of Royal Metal Industries in cardiac arrest. Co-workers Tony Taylor and Will Mitchell immediately started performing CPR, while Margie Miller grabbed the automated external defibrillator (AED) and rushed out to assist with the situation.
“It was something that we had trained for, but then when you see the situation in front of you, you just have to spring into action,” said Miller.
The team performed CPR and used the AED until emergency crews arrived. After a brief stay in the hospital, Roarke was able to return back to work three weeks after his heart attack.
“It is important that everyone knows CPR,” said Roarke. “If it wasn’t for my co-workers, I wouldn’t be standing here today.”
Taylor, Mitchell and Miller all attended the CPR and First Aid class offered through OMC.
